It has been years since he first told the story about doing this (without names at the time), but it was both a brag that he could do it as a solo practitioner without hard rules against it, and an attempt to throw opposing lawyers off by having them underestimate him. He missed the part where it made him look like an idiot. We've also seen his motion practice, and I'm not sure they were super far off their initial impressions.
That latter reasoning is also his tried-and-true go-to for drinking on stream: he says he's not actually drinking as much as it looks like he is, and it's just sleight-of-hand to throw hostile guests off or to make friendly guests more comfortable. Similarly, for some unknown reason, I'm not so sure I believe this anymore either.
