MrBeast overtakes PewDiePie as most-subscribed YouTuber

MrBeast has ended PewDiePie's reign as the YouTuber with the most subscribers - the first change at the top in almost 10 years.

Swedish creator PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, became the most-subscribed YouTuber in August 2013 with his gaming reaction videos.

In 2019, he was the first person to attract 100 million subscribers.

But the philanthropy of MrBeast, really called Jimmy Donaldson, gained him his 112 millionth subscriber this month.

Although YouTube does not show the exact numbers, that pushed him above PewDiePie's 111 million.

MrBeast is known for videos featuring huge cash giveaways and prizes, as well as charity work.

In 2021, he launched a separate philanthropy-themed YouTube channel, which itself has more than 10 million subscribers, and he has a licensed charity that functions as a food bank to feed communities across the US.

He and fellow YouTuber Mark Rober organised international collaborative fundraisers TeamSeas and TeamTrees, which focus on environmental issues - the latter raising more than $24m (£16.7m) to plant 20 million trees worldwide.

And PewDiePie himself donated almost $70,000 to the TeamTrees project.

Mastered the art

British YouTuber Steven Bridges, whose videos have millions of views on the platform, told the BBC MrBeast has "mastered the skill" of making compelling content.

"There's probably no other YouTuber in the world who understands it as well as MrBeast," he said.

"Making an entertaining video is one thing, but ensuring that every single second of a video keeps the viewer hooked is very difficult to pull off, and MrBeast's retention - the percent of the video the average viewer watches - and view counts speak for themselves.

"Really, MrBeast is playing the game of making the most entertaining videos that appeal to the biggest number of people, and he's consistently knocking it out of the park.

"I don't think there's any YouTuber out there that's surprised MrBeast has taken the number one spot."

T-Series

Though neither has yet commented on the milestone, PewDiePie previously said he thought MrBeast would "definitely" overtake him.

"I can't wait for it to be over," he joked in a video from August 2022. "He definitely deserves it. I hope he does it."

And while MrBeast has become the most-subscribed individual user on YouTube, he is some way off having the biggest YouTube channel.

T-Series, an Indian music video publishing company, leads the way in that category with more than 200 million subscribers.

Despite their apparent rivalry for the top YouTuber crown, MrBeast publicly supported PewDiePie when the music video channel rose to prominence.

In 2018, PewDiePie had the top YouTube channel altogether, and became embroiled in a - mostly jokey - public rivalry with T-Series over the top spot.

MrBeast was the first prominent YouTuber to make videos supporting PewDiePie, buying radio adverts and billboards in North Carolina urging people to subscribe to him.

Over the course of a year, PewDiePie eventually lost the top channel spot to T-Series, although he went from about 60 million to 90 million subscribers in the contest, making his lead as top YouTuber apparently unassailable.

That has ultimately proved not to be the case.

End of an era. I can't fucking stand MrBeast, him and his faggy pedobeard. Sure PewDiePie was never the pinnacle of content, but I'd rather have his screeching over video games for ten minutes straight over MrBeast's sanitized bullshit. MrBeast, while never a great YouTuber, was at least enjoyable back when he was doing shit like making fun of children's intros and microwaving microwaves, but unfortunately he wiped most of those videos when he switched over to making the garbage he does now.

Well damn, must feel awkward trying to help Felix surpass T-Series all those years ago only for you to take his reign as most subscribed individual now.

Can't say I'm really surprised, Mrbeast really perfected the Marketing game and does his best at trying to get damn near everyone to watch him based on his editing and thumbnails.

MrBeast hides behind the philanthropic causes that do good for society with challenges that would make a manchild blush.

Even MeatCanyon nailed it better than I ever could.

Última edición:
He has yet to have a guy tell people to subscribe to him and slaughter a bunch of muslims tho

You weren't kidding about the soyface thumbnails. For what I've seen, he's neutral, but he's the poster boy of men who eventually vote left/progressive.

I honestly thought Pewdiepie had retired after he tried to buy forgiveness from the ADL.
People think he's retired because he's off twitter so journos aren't stalking him about what he says or says not. Technically, he still makes money. Besides the videos, he and Marzia sell trash eco-friendly hoodies or something they design. He also still has endorsements and games.

Who even is this retard? I've heard and seen things about his chocolate, that PRIME drink, and the fact that he's this rich as fuck retard who got rich by doing literally nothing.

But why is he the most subbed Youtuber now? What the fuck does this guy even do? What is so amazing about him and his content that is making him consistently on the top of all the boards?

TL;DR, why should I care?

I have no idea who Mr Beast is yet I see him mentioned everywhere. He came out of nowhere. No doubt he is just a corporate actor that merely plays a role to appeal to people. I see them a lot with charity things, so they basically used people's goodwill to get numbers. When the channel gets lots of subscribers, I wouldnt be surprised to see it sold off and then all of a sudden the channel is about selling Toyotas.

MrBeast is a master of making family friendly children entertainment content that Youtube's advertisers love. He is less of a personality and more of a brand. His videos require a company to make and end up looking like cable TV productions in execution so his content really just goes full circle in how Youtube got big on being something different and relatable compared to television to now being dominated by a man who relies on a 30 person team and giant sets.

Here is his "thumbnail face":

He is also proficient at using an editing style that focuses so hard on maintaining viewer retention it resembles an audiovisual equivalent of jangling keys in front of a baby to keep their attention:

Finally, he is skilled in monetizing charity and kindness which is great for PR and his reputation but also doubles as a way for his child fans to deflect any real criticism about his videos:

Honestly he is the perfect champion for the website Youtube has become, a corporate sanitized playground where Youtubers trying to maximize profit and engagement resemble products more then people.

I can respect Mr. Beast a little bit for his initiatives such as #TeamTrees and #TeamSeas. Everything else I do not care for.

I feel his subscriber count is as high as it is because people get dopamine rushes from people being randomly given expensive gifts such as entire houses or a private jet. It's the Oprah Winfrey effect. Never mind the fact that nobody thinks of what happens after the cameras turnoff and the recipients settle down with said gifts that may lead to the donation being a white elephant more than anything else. An example might be the person who got a house for free realizing how high maintenance costs are, not being able to pay the property taxes, etc., and needing to go through the long process of trying to sell it.

To this day, I'm not entirely certain how he can afford to give away high ticket items such as these on a constant basis. Surely sponsorships and money from YouTube views can't subsidize the entire cost.

I've vaguely heard o f him. Generally the more subscribers the worse the content.

MrBeast is astroturf, 100%. Google realized there was a huge untapped market in the 8-14 year old demo, hired a guy to pretend to be the Soy King, and started artificially inflating his numbers and thrusting his videos in the faces of every fucking person who dares set foot on their site. Eventually fake popularity became real popularity, and now they're making bank off this guy who looks like he has no functional nerves in the top half of his face.
