Maybe. I'd call it a fad. But Elon intends to turn it into a completely different app where you can make transactions and shit (iirc). Will it die? Probably eventually. I mean, unless its allowed to transform into something more useful than a cudgel for trannies and leftists.

Personally, I blame it becoming a universal space for everyone ranging from disgusting normals, boomers, your current boss, your next boss, and whatever boring & no fun allowed "people". When you are forced to obey social norms the same as real life all the people who make a site interesting flee to greener pastures where they can be themselves more and not have to fear real consequences of immediate family and your boss. Without them it just turns into a boomerbox. That and the character of commander data being more human than zucc doesnt help, I think everyone has known for years about zuckerberg trying to catalog every bit of information that he can get his claws on.

IIRC it's huge in the developing world but not terribly popular domestically. Part of what personally drove home the idea that Zuckerberg has a particularly bad reputation among the non-terminally online is that my sister, aunt, and father have all independently said they don't trust having it on their phone and prefer to text/email people.

Makes sense, in my personal circles my friends for some reason all use messenger, it should be noted most of them are as technically literate as cavemen. I suspect facebooks popularity today is purely due to sheer inertia. In the last decade excluding tumblr which shot themselves in the foot how many big supersites managed to be dethroned, I think its popularity for texting is purely due to convenience since ive always thought for consumer products/services convenience and ease of use is king for anyone who isnt learned in the technical side of a service.

There was this very brief time period from like 2014 to 2016 when Facebook was really at it's peak, damn near everyone was on it. There were groups you could join that were basically 4chan on FB, it was amazing to have that kind of content right next to your aunt's boomer minion memes. Fun times, but too many people (strangely a lot of them from Canada) got assmad at offensive jokes posted in closed groups they could have just ignored, and FB started slowly getting more heavy handed with censorship.

People also woke up to the data harvesting shenanigans going on, and like someone else said, younger people didn't want to be on the same site their parents used. Throw in the collective temper tantrums that happened after Trump won in 2016, a lot of people left because it just wasn't the same place anymore. I held onto my account until early 2017ish so I could keep in touch with some people, but as more and more left even that reason evaporated.

I have relatives who still use it, for them it's more like a content aggregation site than social media. They don't really talk to anyone except the same handful of people more normal humans would just send a text message to. Now it's just boomers all the way down.

It wouldn't surprise me if something similar happens to Twitter, though I don't see that happening unless a single major competitor comes along that enough people latch onto. Maybe TikTok.

Facebook died as a common sharing experience by users, but not as a tool for companies, businesses or influencers. Twitter is the only one who has been able to keep its initial freshness due to the nature and the moderation of the site. But yeah, I think it can be broadly said that we are witnessing a gradual case of social network fatigue, were people would rather avoid "untrue" places.

A fairly clear tendency this one, just look at the the latest successful social media projects: bereal and clubhouse. Both focus heavily on fleeting moments of "pure truth" where you are the main character and then it goes away.

Facebook is dying for a number of reasons.

#1 is it’s a generational thing, it’s simply not “cool” to use FB anymore because it’s your parents social network. As far as I’m aware this doesn’t really exist with Twitter.

#2 is Zuckerberg is easily THE most hated and least trusted tech CEO, and his lizard-person stench will hang over FB as long as he’s in charge. You’ll find people defending Steve Jobs or Bill Gates or even Jeff Bezos, but literally NOBODY likes Zuckerberg.

#3 is Zuckerberg going full retard on Metaverse bullshit, which is mostly a self-inflicted wound but also kind of a reaction to Tim Apple cucking the Zuck by basically cutting them off from all user data on Apple devices.

I've never had social media, but I feel like Facebook and Twitter aren't really comparable.

Facebook was a thing that was actually beneficial to people in some other time from what I can tell. It would even encourage people to get together and leave their houses.

Twitter is much worse and more rotten to its core, it's basically a way for corporations and journalists to sell stuff and influence public opinion, a sort of pulpit from which rightthinkers are able to preach to the masses and organize hysterical campaigns against anyone they don't like.
Plus even with that aside, its structure actively encourages people to be dumb, miserable, and angry. The entire concept of Twitter is shitty.

So basically I don't think Twitter will go away as easily, because it's too useful a tool for the establishment.

I tried to make a (new) Facebook account recently just to see what it turned into. They demanded a phone number, 2 pieces of real legal ID and my home address.

If Twitter is dumb enough to do that then it will also die.

There was a very strong closed-network community of people that were keeping Facebook alive by posting memes, having fun, and roasting other people in closed groups. Zuckerberg went full Xinnie the Pooh with the censorship, adopted a social credit system and decided to murder his own userbase in cold blood. The anonymous alts? Gone. The groups where you could meme? Beaten to death with a hammer. Roasting groups? Online bullying is now illegal, 30 day ban for saying some retard has a bad hair-do. It's gotten to the point today where you can no longer say the word "Bitch" anymore depending on where you are and what your account's history is. Hell even the Coomer groups where 40 year old women would post lewds for simp attention were being banned left and right. The new audiences were turned off by the photo ID requirements and the phone # requirements. The older audiences simply couldn't post because they used "retard" or "autistic" one too many times. If you tried to use the platform for anything fun, chances are you've spent more time banned than you have logged as actual user time. It's not that only Boomers choose use Facebook, it's that Boomers are the only people ALLOWED to use Facebook. It's driving away it's own userbase. It seems to me all of these social media platforms serve horrific dual purposes. Facebook is a social credit system test run, Reddit is a bot-farm, TikTok is a propaganda machine, Instagram is photo-mapping, and Twitter is news media narrative control. If Musk doesn't complete re-shape it top to bottom, Twitter will die and that's no easy task because it's internal systems work against it.

Aside from the censorship/no fun allowed, I feel like this thing that big social media sites have going now where they won't even fucking let you see content unless you sign up is preventing them from luring in anyone who's even the slightest bit cynical about social media. Once upon a time, I used to stumble across websites with interesting content, and if I felt I had something I wanted to say, I'd sign up to post it.* Nowadays, I go on facebook/reddit/insta/twitter to look up something that's of interest to me and I'm met with some variation of 'you need to log in/sign up to look at this! hohohooo' no fucking thank you, I'd rather be a hermit. Even your average boomer may well react to this in the same way as they'd react to being asked about all their personal info by a cold caller. It's unnatural/uncomfortable to be putting all your personal details out into the aether like that. Obviously this isn't the only factor at play, or even a major one, but it seems to affect all social media sites equally. Idek what their endgame is like congratulations you've just ensured that I use your site as little as humanly possible.

I don't get why people don't like social media. It's a layer of privacy and freedom (assuming you don't have messenger on your phone). The point it to be able to answer messages at your leisure and not have to worry about someone texting you while you're actually doing something interesting.
