I have to work tons of extra hours and night shifts I'm not used to because of the staffing crisis.
Energy drinks/caffeine is the easy answer but I'm trying to break the habit....
Security-type job and being recorded by CCTV, so I can't shitpost too hard or do anything that can't be dropped at a moment's notice. I do have a large desk and wifi.

Foremost you must reorganize your sleep cycle to meet the demands of your workplace. Keep several forms of passive entertainment on hand. A wide variety of audiobooks, podcasts, music, periodicals, and ebooks will be your friends. When you start drowsing switch to something new. I moderate caffeine intake. I normally imbibe midshift to sharpen up for the final stretch. It is important to moderate as it is easy to become reliant and unhealthy as it will likely affect what will be a delicate sleep schedule.

I would imagine that's the type of job you can bring a laptop to so long as you're doing your rounds.

You break up your sleep during the day if you don't want to mess up your sleep schedule or daily schedule too much. 6 when you get home and 2 after dinner is the easiest.

If you work a security type job, when you start to doze maybe take a patrol, when I had to work long very early hours I would walk around if I started to doze, I have a job that convientently facilitates that
And I feel you on stopping energy drinks and caffeine, I've done the same

Apples.

The amount of fructose, vitamins and the fact that you are eating something, so your body naturally tries to keep awake so as to finish the meal and digest it (if you aren't loading up on carbs and crash from them obviously), usually helped me get through late shifts.

It's not a cure all and it's not better than coffee but it's a natural way that doesn't involve caffeine or even its tea equivalent.

If your only goal is to stay awake and there's no need to do anything really productive? Porn. Arousal increases blood pressure, heart rate and releases a cocktail of endorphins, just whatever you do, don't coom.

You're probably better off sticking to caffeine, much healthier

No joke they make an energy drink called "Cocaine"- one can of it has as much caffeine as three red bulls it works alot better for me than a Monster or Red Bull. It also tastes alot better- cinnamon and cherry. I have to order it from Amazon but it's well worth the price when you have to wake up early for the China markets IMO

Thanks for the advice. It really is about loading up on things to do and being clever about when I do get to sleep.

Energy drinks I get, why are you trying to kick caffine completely? A cup or two of coffee a day is not a big deal.
I hope to get into a training program where no one is allowed caffeine for the entire duration and don't want to suffer for lack of it. I need to learn to wake up without it.

Good idea, thanks.

The Wikipedia page for that was a blast.
Originally, the drink was going to be named "Reboot", but the name was already taken. Instead, the name "Cocaine" was chosen for its potential to be controversial.
In 2007, Cocaine was temporarily pulled from shelves in the United States, after the Food and Drug Administration published a warning letter stating that Cocaine "was illegally marketing the drink as both a street drug alternative and a dietary supplement".
The Las Vegas Sun reported that online sales of Cocaine had quadrupled two weeks after the FDA's warning letter.
I guess the controversial name scheme paid out.

I have been in a similar situation working in the control room of an airport often 2 shifts at a time.....don't use energy drinks and coffee to much so you avoid hart palpitations, anxiety attacks or giant headaches which you can get with overuse. When you feel you are crashing have a cup of soup or a not to cold glass of water mixed with lemon juice. Don't eat to much during your breaks and avoid artificial sugar, i know its tempting to get fast-food specially when your colleges go for it but try to eat healthy.

Thanks! I'm not allowed to leave the building when I'm working solo so I don't really get breaks.... But I can hide in the back!!!

I've thought about doxing my job and making a thread, like that lady who made a great thread about cleaning up crime scenes. But I worry it'll get obnoxiously political or TMI-inducing. The crime scene bodies never came into her thread to spill spagetti or bitch.

L-theanine. it's the "caffeine" in tea.
L-theanine is nice, but you know tea has actual caffeine, right? Black tea has around half the caffeine of coffee and green tea has about 1/4th. And black and green tea (and white and matcha and oolong) come from the same species plant, with differences in harvest and processing methods. If you just brew a cup of black tea with two tea bags it's roughly the same caffeine level as coffee.

Yes, but you know that you can buy L-theanine by itself too?

I that case take podcasts with you which are engaging like a comedian or something. I once was ordered to close a gate after a plane has departed which turned out to be delayed for 10 hours, and since regulations demanded that at a open gate, staff should be present at all times so i was made the sacrifice. And since my supervisor held close watch over me via CCTV i needed to behave myself and since there wasnt a living soul in the area, i played something to lift me spirits like Jordan Peterson interviews or Anthony Jeselnik, tho afterwards my boss was asking me why i was grinning like an idiot all the time.

No caffeine? You crazy or sumtin??

Take vitamins, keep your mind focused.....and I find that my insomnia helps out quite a bit.

Honestly, when you reverse your sleep patterns you should be fine.
