When I was 14 or 15, my parent forced me into my first tattoo. I was super gung ho about it, as any new teen would be, and eagerly accepted anything that would be tattooed on me. It ended up being some flash from the wall that my mom had pointed to.

I remember going to bed that night and I started crying. I cried because after all the adrenaline and "this is so cool" thoughts wore off, I thought about how it's there forever and it wasn't even something I necessarily picked myself. Yeah I wanted a body mod and yeah I was stoked as shit to have a parent endorse it, but that gut feeling of "this isn't what I want..." crept up on me when I was alone in my bedroom.


I can't help but relate that experience to these kids who are getting surgeries and drugs. Of course they're going to be fucking pumped while their brain is biologically wired to be Impulsive. Of course having a parent endorse it is going to make them think that it's the right decision.

I wonder how many of them spend the first night alone, either after surgery or when they finally feel the effects of hormones, and just feel regret.

I can get my tattoo covered but they can't reverse the damage that they had done while an adult supported their pubescent whims

I'm guessing they feel the same but it is conveniently blamed on "post surgical depression", medicine side effects, being a moody teen, etc
The gas lighting never stops with these people and unlike with your tattoo, there are huge social pressures outside the family to continue the abuse. It is truly horrible to watch.

Agreed. Amsterdam is a theme park, comparable to the moon in Futurama. No Dutch people go there or live there in the bit tourists go to. It is riddled with crime, drugs, homelessness and just foreigners going 'wow isn't Holland great they have Starbucks everywhere so Dutch.' Expat forums are full of Americans crying that they can't get contact or accepted into Dutch society.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, they often don't even know what troons are, because they're more concerned with local problems like cost of living, who the mole is, and how to get women to work more (Netherlands has shit emancipation, it's a traditional Christian country in many senses, but with the mentality of Scrooge McDuck). If he’d done the least amount of research, he’d realize that you can’t just immigrate to Europe, aside from outright buying a citizenship.

You can maaaybe find a company to sponsor you if you have supernin demand skills, but that’s a temporary thing.

There’s family reunification, but that’s far from a sure thing.

You can be a rapefugee and apply for asylum, but that means years of waiting usually. And is often temporary, some countries are already sending Syrians back.

Though I’d fucking love for him to try. It would be absolutely priceless to see him show up at the local welfare office and explain that he has a disability due to IBS and need gibs. I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance whether they’d start laughing or politely explain that he doesn’t qualify.

Life as an immigrant is often pretty grim in Europe. Unless you speak the language, the only jobs are shitty cleaning jobs in the middle of the night.

And even if you speak the language there’s a good chance you’ll never find a job in your old professsional field, but have to stick with minimum wage shit as an immigrant.

There’s a reason why Europeans don’t travel around and move countries the way Americans move states.
