Can We Stop Calling People Picky Eaters?

Mushrooms are too rubbery. Broccoli smells like farts. Celery is the devil’s vegetable. These are some of my unpopular food opinions that have, at one time or another, gained me the title of “picky eater.”

What exactly is picky eating? For most, it means being particular about food texture, flavor, temperature or touching on a plate.

As a vegan, I’m expected to love all vegetables because what else do I eat every day? I’m used to the comments and questions about protein sources, energy levels and the lack of cheese, but it gets a lot worse when people see how selective I am about what I do eat. It must seem strange to others: I’ve already reduced the amount of food I can eat by being vegan, so why would I choose to further reduce it?

Well, it’s not really a choice. Most people who are particular about their food are not trying to be awkward. Most of us would rather eat these things if we could. But for one reason or another, those foods just don’t taste good to us, and I don’t think that should make us targets for criticism.

For children, the worry is reasonable. From the time a kid is born, parents fret about their kid’s diet and nutrient intake. Their kid might not like certain foods, refuse to eat something especially healthy or reject an entire food group. Their bodies and brains are developing, so they need proper fuel to help them grow. But what purpose does it serve to call an adult a picky eater? Why does it matter to anyone else what we put into our bodies? As adults, if we are purposeful about what we choose to eat, we are called fussy, seen as annoying or accused of just doing it for attention.

The label of “picky eater” only serves to further stigmatize food and eating habits, topics that are already fraught for many people. Questioning what people eat or don’t eat could be triggering to those who suffer from eating disorders. There are also religious and cultural reasons why someone might not eat certain foods: Hindus don’t eat beef, and followers of Judaism and Islam don’t eat pork. This doesn’t mean they are being picky; they are just living by their morals. By calling someone out for not liking a popular dish or ingredient, we are trying to get them to conform to our way of being. What someone does or does not eat should have no bearing on us, yet some people insist on making others feel bad for not conforming.

It’s a way of forcing our choices onto others: If I have to eat this, then so should you. This goes back to childhood. Some of us were forced to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn’t leave the table. For many, this means that certain foods trigger memories of childhood, taking us back to a time when we had no autonomy over our own bodies or what went into them. Being in a scenario where your “picky eating” is called out can bring back the trauma, shame and frustration from childhood.

We need to stop calling each other picky eaters. It serves no purpose other than trying to get everyone to behave in the same way. So what if someone doesn’t like avocados because the texture is gross to them? There’s no reason to call attention to it or make that person feel self-conscious about it.

This says nothing of people who have diagnosable health conditions who have to restrict what they eat. Sure, lots of people have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon, but every time we roll our eyes when someone asks if a menu item is gluten free, we could be rolling our eyes at someone who has celiac disease. People are not obligated to disclose every food intolerance they have just so they don’t get judged. I often have to ask if a drink has sweeteners in it because I have a bad reaction to them, but I’ve seen waitstaff roll their eyes at my question, and it’s not a good feeling.

There is no moral superiority to eating all food indiscriminately, though many would have you believe differently. No one is a better person because they eat healthier or a wider variety of food. But we’ve attached morality to food. Some foods are good while others are labeled bad. Eating the wrong foods can lead to judgment, but even if you refuse to eat “junk” food, you’re labeled a snob.

Veganism can be seen as a type of picky eating; vegans are selective about what to eat based on our love for animals, the health of the planet and concerns for our fellow man. Why is this seen as a negative? Shouldn’t we all be concerned about what we put into our bodies? Why isn’t discernment about food seen as a good thing?

I remember hearing from an old French chef once that everything can taste great with the right sauce.

There was this mindset that the only hurdles to enjoying any food was its preparation and your willingness to try it. Lot of people are terrible at cooking vegetables, just boiling it til it’s as soft as mush. So it’s little wonder some would be picky about eating things they’d always had prepared terribly.

Author is probably a retard in the kitchen and eats a bunch of stuff like cereal rather than learn to make decent vegan food.
Niggas need to learn to steam and roast. I can’t think of a single vegetable where boiling is my preferred way of eating it, not counting carrots or hard squash or potatoes where you might wanna pre-boil it to soften it a little before further prep.

Seriously like most of my vegetable consumption nowadays is just brush on some olive oil, sprinkle some salt and pepper and garlic powder, and nuke it in the air fryer.

Some things should be stigmatized, when someone is such a picky eater that it affects dietary nutrition or creates substantial difficulties in procuring groceries or being part of social gatherings.
My problem when it comes to grocery shopping I think is that I still buy the same stuff I did when I was a little kid.

Most recently I bought two loaves of Raisin Bread, a box of Fruit By The Foot, Several Boxes Of Capri Sun, Some Sandwich Meat, A Pumpkin Pie, A Few Bananas, and some Chips And Spinach Dip. I think it really opened my eyes to the fact that I need to start eating better again.

See, I used to do the whole smoothie thing. You know, chop up some bananas or a few apples and turn the blender on. After I got paralyzed though I couldn’t do that anymore for a long time and so I think I just fell back into old habits. Now that I can walk and move around again I think it’s time I start refining my shopping list again.

I had to check if my children didn't write this...

Ok, gonna PL now: I was like this when I was younger. blame being badly raised for it. As an adult, when I started to have kids, I knew I had to change myself for them and it was a slow process. When I learned to cook, I tried many things myself and I discovered that many things I "hated", I actually did enjoy them when I did them my way.

It's normal for kids to not like things, btw. It's wrong to force them to eat them, but it's fine to still tell them that you won't waste food and they must eat even a bit. When I make something they don't like, I still ask them to eat some because they still need to eat and I won't make special food for them.

Of course she is a vegan. We adults make small concessions for kids and their diets because they are still learning and if we're invited to eat something they aren't familiar with, then they can't remain hungry for the rest of the day. Vegans are like this: if you make a BBQ, you need to make those concessions for these fuckers otherwise they will be ruining everybody's day, be certain of it.

All the ones I've tried are pretty good. I wouldn't want to eat Indian food every day because the smell is so overbearing, but it's good on occasion.
The problem is when food fad home "chefs" try to make it. It's like quinoa. It got the superfood label and everyone and their brother was cramming it into everything without any knowledge of how to prepare it. The seeds coat themselves with saponins - the chemicals that give soap its wonderful flavor - because it repels birds. It needs to be washed off. I'm sure that even the Inca had figured this out.

I'm always horrified by what I see in other people's grocery carts.

It's a testament to the resilience of the human body that people can eat absolute garbage day after day for decades and keep living.

Remember these morons were falling sick for eating quinua and the problem was that they were mixing it with lentils, which is something you are never supposed to do because both are very hard to digest and no Peruvian would ever mix these to together. They ate a bomb. They never knew what was wrong with them because the bomb eventually blew up in what I assume was a Chernobyl-level explosion of farts and vomit.

I did this thing I jokingly called the “Hebrew” diet once which was basically only bread and water for about two years. It was probably the healthiest I’ve ever felt in my life.

Stupid toddler ass bitch with her soy tendies or w/e. You know how hard it is to host a party these days because of coastal clowns like this bitch? Eat like a proper primate or die for all I care.

The only thing I outright wont consume is liquid milk cause it's weirdly creamy and flavorless and rapes my anus from the inside out... and brown rice/quinoa are shitty too (I refuse to eat that stuff while white refined grains exist). I'll eat seafood, raw oysters, raw radishes, brussel sprouts. I'll try anything once.

Ps. Vegan food all tastes like mushrooms and grease and the only gluten free foods I want to eat are the ones that are supposed to be that way like tequila and steak.

How about eating something other than your highly processed frozen food-like products you simply pop in the oven and eat? You vanilla fucks...

Stop ruining it for the rest of us by driving a market for mediocre food.

And some have Yuri in the right seat
Right seat, left seat, crew chief, all my folks and I get it done.

Remember one particular assignment, we'd go out for lunch from time to time. One of the guys loved Long John Silver's. Rest of us weren't that big on it, but we'd go there now and then, only fair.

When you eat with company, you endure the yucky food they give you and you do your best to smile as you choke it down. Basic manners that should be beaten into any child or manchild.

Vegan hates vegetables. It's news.

Also, there's a fun overlap with the people that proudly fight for PICKY EATER TOLERANCE (Stop Bullying Me and Invite Me Out To Dinner edition) and calling themselves SUPER TASTERS. Super tasters sample wines or coffees, not engorge themselves on Dominoes and chicken nuggets while crying at the sight of glazed carrots and apple slices.

Long John Silver's has really good chicken. The fish sucks. Really weird how the best things there are balls of fried bread and greasy chicken tenders. I'd rather just go somewhere where the food isn't 90% grease, but them hush puppies are great.
