I think a lot of basket cases who aren't cut out for civilian life join the military in the hope the structured lifestyle will help them get their shit together and actually be functional. And then the moment they aren't in the military anymore they go batshit again and they end up trooning out. There's two possibilities. The latter is a maladaptive coping mechanism for people with a history of trauma, especially childhood sexual abuse, as a way to dissociate from your trauma. When being yourself is untenable, the obvious solution is to be not-you, even if it means killing off the old you.

The former is why people join cults in the first place. They need a sense of identity after losing theirs, or they need a support network. Unfortunately, that means you have to hand over your sense of self and you judgment over to the cult.
