i am the person who gathers public health data. patients of my job are probably the single most likely group to commit suicide of any intersecting demographics (for example, you must be an unemployed man to be a patient there.) when they admit into the facility they are asked about their sexuality and about even more seemingly unrelated stuff such as are they a twin, are their parents divorced, which is their dominant hand, etc. then the state collects this data from us and this is where the research comes from. it’s not just answering a random phone survey, all this data collection comes from accredited medical facilities if it is reputable data (which is a different discussion entirely). the patients do sometimes unfortunately commit suicide and if they do then the county coroner’s office notifies us so we can also provide suicide statistics to the state.

if you can get them into confidential, one-on-one conversations.

i always try to steer the conversation, ex. “i’m worried about the shit they’re teaching in schools now”. most people will know exactly what you’re referring to, but you can gauge their reaction pretty well. they’ll either bring it up or hint at what you’re talking about, or they’ll have a suspicious reaction. the good thing about this is you have plausible deniability, there’s other things wrong with the school system you can bring up instead.

it’s a good method in general to gauge someone’s views on other controversial topics without as much risk. it’s hard to find people who agree with you if those topics are never touched out of fear.

Im sure the current usage comes from the renewed cultural awareness of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale after it got adapted to television, but there is another more niche reference that may or may not have significance. Years ago on Tumblr there was discourse regarding the Nickelodeon show Legend of Korra where someone wrote a wall of text referring to the dynamic of the two female main characters as "feudal lord and handmaiden", as a batshit tumblr way of saying which is the man/woman in the relationship. The OP was being serious but it stuck as a sort of in-joke on the site with regards to lesbian relationships.

Less relevant than Handmaids Tale for sure, but still amusing considering how many transbians are cartoon-obsessed incels.

"Handmaiden" has also been part of nursing discourse for decades, when discussing public image/stereotype of nurses as "doctor's helpers."

Nursing is still pretty pink-collar, so the term might have been on some feminist's mind from that.
