Social media brand Meta, formerly the Facebook Company, is opening its first permanent Meta Store for customers to purchase its virtual reality products as a "gateway to the metaverse".

The 1,550-square-foot shop will open on 9 May in Burlingame, California, near the company's Reality Labs campus – a research and development hub for virtual reality products.

Head of Meta Store Martin Gilliard said that the shop will demonstrate how the brand's products are a "gateway" to the metaverse" – a parallel virtual world where people operate as avatars.

"The Meta Store is going to help people make that connection to how our products can be the gateway to the metaverse in the future," he said.

In the shop, which will be open Monday to Friday, customers will be able to try out and play games on Oculus Quest 2, an updated version of the virtual reality headset Oculus Go, in a dedicated demo area.

A large, floor-to-ceiling LED screen will project what is being seen in the headset.

Meta's video-calling device Portal will be displayed on backlit wooden shelves on the main shop floor. Customers will be able to try out Portal in another demo area, as well as place video calls to retail associates to see the gadget in action.

A separate cubicle with glass walls is reserved for Meta's selection of Ray-Ban Stories, smart glasses that allow wearers to record videos via in-built 5MP cameras. Visitors will be able to try a range of style, colour and lens variations.

Unlike the other products in Meta Store, the glasses will not be available to purchase in-store. Customers will have to order them directly from sunglass retailer Ray Ban's website.

Other accessories such as headphones, earphones and charging cables will also be on show and available to purchase in the store.

"We're not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it," explained Gilliard.

"Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it."

Meta's first physical store represents the company's move further into what it calls a "social metaverse company" and away from its origins as a social media company. Last year the brand changed its name from Facebook to Meta.

Gilliard also said that the Burlingame store marks Meta's expansion further into the retail sphere.

"Having the store here in Burlingame gives us more opportunity to experiment and keep the customer experience core to our development," said Gilliard. "What we learn here will help define our future retail strategy."

A number of brands are working on real-life and metaverse cross-over products, such as shoe brand Giuseppe Zanotti, which has released a digital edition of its Cobras trainers in the metaverse.

Design studio Layer recently unveiled a pair of smart glasses for tech company Viture that lets the user play games or stream media via a virtual screen.

This meta shit has been both gay and a work since inception. Gotta keep kikebook alive for just a little bit longer eh Zuckerbot? China still isn't taking your shitty data syphon tool. I will live in reality, I will not eat the bugs or fake meat, I will not live in a pod.

Isn't faceberg's VR product range a little shallow for this? One flavor of headset in 2 storage size options, no need to buy extra controllers unless they break because no couch co-op, accessories limited to headstraps, carrying cases and charging cables, no physical games, no mascot character to make merch out of.

It's like if Sony made a store that only sells the Playstation Vita.

That's why they have the Ray-Bans (that you can't actually buy)

All of this "metaverse" VR shit by normies is a total mistake.

At least when I got the idea a futuristic technological society was going to be the norm, there would be robots fighting with high energy weapons or where there'd be a killer MMORPG game with a hidden blackbox some people would try to gamebreak and crack.

Tl;dr rebel and revolt against society, everything has been perverted by fucking fags and npcs

This is dumb as shit but kids whose parents let them are going to eat it up.

The only people who are hyping up Metaverse are Cryptobros. Meanwhile everyone else sees this as a less memey VR chat. Can’t wait to see the innevetable seething from those saying it’s the greatest human advancement since the wheel.

VR in general has been nothing but overhyped gimmick shit since its inception. i have held this opinion ever since the oculus first got hyped, and i still hold to it.
Its pretty solidly in "Enthusiast" territory right now. Really good for the really small IRL niche of people who really want a certain kind of experience. Its in the same pool of gear as driving and flight sim gear at this point.

What its certainly not technologically ready for is any sort of mass multiplayer experience or Metaverse, and its certainly not a high enough demand item to justify its own boutique stores. This feels more like Facebook realizing that its time to double down on this shit or die as a relevant company, with their social media branch maxed and the VR stuff struggling with market penetration.

The technology is probably at least a decade away from being general consumer competitive, with the need for high performance computing and detailed displays in a compact form factor, at a price competitive with gaming consoles, while offering a similar quality of experience. The mobile headsets that exist currently like the Oculus are simply unable to meet that last part, with a massive graphical and gameplay complexity gulf. Any argument about "Its not about the visuals its about the experience" is an enthusiast argument for people who are passionate about the particular things VR does well, and not an argument over why someone who can afford one piece of gaming hardware every generation should chose this one. Same for the much higher quality experience with tethered PC VR that is in a price class well outside what the vast majority will stomach.

Nah, normies are buying quest 2's more and more. That's why the enthusiasts get so pissed off at it. They want their bullshit 4K VR experience when most people just want it for fun gimmicky shit like they did with the Wii.

Facebook only got this big because everyone could afford the hardware. You've got people living in huts with no running water that log into facebook. Meta is going to be dead as fuck in 5 years after FB tanks and Amazon or someone will buy the brand for a few hundred million

There is a big similarity between metaverse fans and cryptobros

Both are retarded idiots that get what they deserve for investing so much into these garbage scams.

Facebook and many others only got where they are because they were "the first" of their kind and most people didnt know any better and thought it was the way of the future.

Younger me was a naive moron but I will applaud myself for never falling into this garbage trend. Especially since everyone in my family and friend circle acted like Im not their friends anymore if I dont become their friends on Facebook and like their posts.

That shit alone made me hate social media with a passion and Im proven right more and more

I respectfully disagree. This VR shit always felt like a gimmick and it will remain that way. Its not as bad as the 3D TV craze (its nearly impossible to find one of those nowadays) but its still not as big as they antecipated it would be.

People need to accept that VR will always just be that, a gimmick that you play until you get tired and return to the winning strategy of a fucking keyboard and mouse. And that is if you can afford it (cue the "oh its affordable now, bruh"). And even if you can afford it, lets face it, most rooms arent suited to use these things (my bed is located right in front of my gaming rig, I literally have no space even if I wanted to)

Also most games for it arent exactly game changers (the best one was Alyx and that game's whole point with existing was to motivate VR headset sales...at least until the Non VR mod is complete).

Now if you got one and you enjoy it, thats fine but things like the Metaverse are just things to try to justify a purchase and introduce a borderline dystopian nightmare of you "owning" things but not really
