🐱 Home Depot shaming staff for their white privilege

CatParty

Home Depot is telling staff to check their privilege at the door if they are white, male, Christian, and heterosexual.

In pictures from a Calgary Home Depot staff room circulating Twitter, the “Leading Practices: Unpacking Privilege” policy strives to shame staffers for their “white privilege” which Home Depot defines as “societal privileges that benefit white people beyond what is commonly experienced by people of colour under the same social, political, and economic circumstances.”

The Western Standard has reached out to both the Canadian and US corporate Home Depot offices to discuss the policy and its origins, but has not heard back.

The policy encourages staff members to talk with each other about their “white privilege” and explains “the word ‘white’ creates discomfort especially when individuals are not used to being defined or described by their race.”

The original tweet was retweeted by Dr. Jordan Peterson with his own commentary.

The leading practices tells staffers “if you’re confident the police exist to protect you, you have white privilege.”

“If while growing up, college was an expectation of you, not a dream, you have class privilege.”

“If you can expect time off from work to celebrate your religious holidays, you have Christian privilege.”

“If you can use public bathrooms without stares, fear or anxiety, you have cisgender privilege.”

“If you don’t have to worry about how to get into a store, you have able-bodied privilege.”

“If you don’t have to explain that your spouse is of the same gender, you have heterosexual privilege.”

The policy includes a checkmark list for checking your privilege: “white, male, class, Christian, cisgender, able-bodied, and heterosexual.”

According to the policy, racism equals racial prejudice, plus power.

“Racial prejudice is a set of discriminatory or derogatory attitudes based on assumptions coming from preconceptions about race/skin colour,” continued the policy.

“Power is the authority granted through social structures and conventions as well as the access to means of communications and resources. This can include authority, privilege, influence, popularity, aggression/threat, etc.”

I like how in that three-panel comic, the "privileged" employee's concern is never actually addressed and she's basically dismissed with more social justice gibberish.

Maybe Home Depot should check their privilege.

There are half a million homeless people in America. Implying that this store only caters to people with homes is discrimination towards the unhoused.

Home Depot is shit anyways. local family owned hardware store master race reporting in, they're cheaper, they always remember me, and actually know what they're talking about.
I want to know how many home improvement projects have been fucked up by people taking the advice of Home Depot employees. They're not carpenters or architects, they're kids and old people making $12 an hour.

If you can expect time off from work to celebrate your religious holidays, you have Christian privilege.”
So what about Jewish privilege? Or Muslim privilege? Or any of the other religions out there that have holiday observances? Because I have had to work Christian holidays, involuntarily, against my will, because of corporate bullshit. Not to mention state and federal holidays. So where was my privilege then?

what if i'm white and i don't think the cops will protect me?

Then you're a white domestic terrorist, duh.

Yep. Although Ace (which is in the middle of where I used to live, with a Home Depot on one end of the highway and a Lowes on the other) changed their jingle, they still rock, and I can (and have) gotten obscure nuts and bolts and screws there that both Lowes and Home Depot employees would just wave vaguely at a sizing chart to "help" me.

Nigga they are working at a home depot making sure bums aren't stealing copper pipes. No one on the floor that isn't a retired contractor has privilege.

Damn shame, I like HD over Lowe's but if they are gonna pull this shit then I need to start going elsewhere

Wow. I have no privilege. Nice to be sure of that fact.

I don’t trust the police will definitely protect me. I didn’t get to go to college. I have to work multiple holidays thanks to my industry. I always worry about using a public restroom - especially about whether there’s going to be piss on a seat, and I’m not married.

No privilege!

I better hope this is just isolated to Canada and not being spread around Home Depots in the USA too. God damn it, don't force me to be a Lowe's shopper instead.

Then for no reason at all, Lowe's stock increased.
Lowes will follow suite and probably has a diversity program already because what company doesn't at this point. The main issue is with the over empowered and over valued HR departments of these corporations. A lot of young college graduates who majored in gender studies or whatever, end up getting jobs in human resources and can influence corporate culture with little impediment.

Spoiler: it’s not

I’ll have to see if my friend who works at a Home Depot can send me a photo of some of this shit

Edit: some shit from American Home Depot that they handed me, will make a follow up post with photos of screens after I get a chance to remove anything that could identify her being the photographer

The real divide is between class not race. Poor whites are an inconvenience to the "white privilege" narrative. Is it a privilege when your taught all your life is that you can get ahead on "merit" then the second you try to get into a place of higher education, even if you fit all the academic criteria you get turned away just because of your skin color? To bring this all back to Home Depot, I bet some idiot in corporate HR thought this policy was a good idea. As if the people who are working at the stores are the group you need to preach to considering they are most likely trying to earn money just to survive.
