If you are going to let your citizens go fight in a foreign war it's probably best if you don't say anything about it. Inevitably some of them will die and somebody as dumb as Trudeau will say something like "one of our guys died" and use it as a propaganda moment and have a state funeral or something and Russia will be right to point out that the West is sending mercenaries to directly engage against Russians.

Volunteers aren't mercs. It's been a loophole for centuries. Letting your citizens travel freely to other countries isn't sending mercenaries.

Also there is no hold over sympathy for Russia by the current elite. There are no people in influential and powerful positions today who experimented with, or at least flirted with "Putinism" in their youth, unlike the post-FDR elite did with Marxism. There has been no great conflict in recent memory in which Russia was an ally.

Ironically Russia makes itself the perfect devil for the current elite by being nominally conventional in its government structure, while retaining a conservative disposition. To the liberals, its as if Russia is a sort of GOPistan. Its probably why dem propagandist kept pushing the link between Trump and Putin, because they knew it would work well on their people. As counter intuitive as this may sound, I don't think the rabid hate Russia invokes and the propaganda would be as effective if they were openly some sort of Neo-Tsarist, or have some sort of Post-Cold War Commie system like China.

The US is the psycho jealous girlfriend that doesn't want her soyboi slave ( Europe ) getting too familiar with another power ( Russia ) where they might be able to form closer ties and economies besides just resource trading. The entire justification for NATO and US occupation/influence in Europe is "Muh ebil russians" since the cold war. Russia today isn't the Soviet Union, for years people in government in Russia denigrate the Bolsheviks as the cause of much of the malaise their still stuck in. If Europe and Russia have neutral/friendly relations then what is the point of the US being so heavy handed in Europe? Nevermind for years its been heavily suspected that the US,China and Russia have been funding climate retard activism to handicap Europe and to keep it dependent on foreign powers for energy, commerce, manufacturing etc.. Now that the US successfully gaslighted their client states to be aggressive against Russia they suddenly find China much more attractive as a partner and Europe now as "unfriendly". Europe is not energy independent, not food independent/sustainable, has no major industrial base for manufacturing, is choked by subversive activism and cosmopolitan hysteria, flooded with migrants and rape gangs that hate the native populations, an incoming economic slump from rising commodities( oil,gas,fertiliser,metals,chemicals,building material etc..) and ruled over by a gang of useless bureaucrats that waste millions a year moving offices (pic rel), not even mentioning a strained healthcare system in near every country, an ageing population and general lack of skills in new comers. Europe is fucked.

Yes but things get pretty close right? You let your citizens volunteer when you strip their citizenships for volunteering in other conflicts like Syria, you send weapons to Ukraine, you allow the citizen to travel unimpeded on Western controlled transportation to the area, the country you have influence over that can block people at the border lets them in. There comes a point when the volunteer angle looks like a bit more than a volunteer.
