Considering what the basis is for most LGBT activism, it's not surprising that some (if not most) make homosexuality out to be a personality trait rather than a sexual interest. It's the unfortunate consequence of endeavoring to make it appear normal in the eyes of others. Now that it's largely regarded as such, others have taken to embracing it as more than what it is. Not to mention watching out for any perceived attempts at hampering its expression or acceptance. Why anyone didn't or couldn't anticipate this, I don't know. The same goes for transsexuality, but perhaps some did see what darkness lay at the end of the road, only to be ignored. Not that it matters much now.
