If everybody was told the truth, all of these globohomo-backed authoritarian shitshow governments would've been challenged or even ended by massive, well-organized revolts a long time ago. The working class can never overthrow the elite because the class views each other as their enemy, instead of the elite as a common enemy, and that's why the media, politicians, corporations, and all their glowie agents and brainwashed NPCs will always lie to you, to preserve that rule.

They probably expected Zelensky to negotiate. With Ukraine's air force gone, and NATO making it clear they weren't going to intervene, that would be the reasonable choice.
Naturally, neither Zelensky nor his funders care how many peasants are going to die for their agenda.

I think that accidently released Russian article has shown Russia goals for this war have changed like a Paradox player with more and more battle and occupation warscore. I think Putin miscalculated on two issues.

1. I think he planned for this to be a limited, very short war in which Zelensky would see the writing on the wall and negotiate a favorable peace for Russia within three days of fighting, things like recognizing the annexation of Crimea, recognizing the independence of the Donbas, Minsk II Federalization of the Ukrainian government, relatively limited fighting (not hitting areas where civilian casualties were likely) with limited objectives, a repeat of his war in Georgia in 2008.

However, Zelensky didn't come to the table as expected after the initial suckerpunch of the Russian attack.

I know some of you will say "But gay_nig_from_outer_space there was a first round of talks three days into the invasion!" and you would be right. However the Ukrainians demanded nothing less then not just a Russian withdrawal from Ukraine, they demanded a withdrawal from the Donbas AND Crimea! Both sides clearly were not in a mood to start on those terms.

The problem that this has created is that while it did surprise the Russians and catch them off balance, to quote the American comedian Chris Rock.

"If the Police have to come get you, they're bringing an ass kicking with them"

Russia in any negotiations from now on is going to demand more and more concessions, and now the goals appear to have changed for Russia if they have to conquer the whole country, They will likely annex large chucks of the Ukraine, possibly (though unlikely) the whole country.

2. I think he thought the Germans, Italians and other EU nations that rely on Russian energy wouldn't kill their economies for their American masters, and instead the war could be used to create rifts in the EU based on economic interests or at least delay a ban from SWIFT for a time. If this was his belief, he was wrong and the central Europeans fell on the sword the Americans handed to them. Initially this calculation was correct, but the EU states caved to American pressure.
