Enlisted means they signed their name to it willingly (although there may be other incentives depending on the country or branch) and conscripted means you have to serve in the armed forces by law. The consequences for refusal differ between countries but I believe in World War I many of them were jailed.

Its not spelt that way either by Russians or Ukrainians. After Ukraine seperated from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a bunch of Academics did a project where they created a new
set of rules for translating words into English. The rules they selected led to the English spelling changing to Kyiv. There is no grand historic basis for "Kyiv" and its no more "correct"
than Kiev was. You could spell it ten different ways and all of them would be equally correct.

But changing how words are translated into English is something that nationalists always do as sort of a show of strength. It makes them feel good about themselves for
some reason.
