Culture ‘Don’t Look Up’ Reminds Us the Rich Will Doom Us All

Netflix’s latest comedy thriller Don’t Look Up serves as a metaphor for the real world crisis that is climate change. It shows us the dangers of allowing the rich to hold too much power.

Imagine a world where blind nationalism, political division, science denialism, capitalism, and an obsession with pop culture run rampant—sound familiar? In Don’t Look Up, Netflix’s latest star-studded, irreverent, witty, apocalyptic comedy, audiences come face to face with a parody of our own reality. Directed by Adam McKay, the film follows the trials and tribulations of two astronomers, Dr. Randall Mindy and Dr. Kate Dibiasky (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who have discovered a planet-killing comet headed directly toward Earth, and their desperation to communicate its severity to a distracted population.

The movie is a heavy metaphor for the leading crisis we face today: climate change. And while there are many lessons we can take away, one main message echoed throughout the film: It’s time to eat the rich (before it’s too late).

Mindy, a panic-ridden scientist and professor seemingly inspired by the White House’s Dr. Anthony Fauci, is a character many of us might relate to. His incessant nerves reflect the existential doom and climate anxiety of younger generations across the globe. Dibiasky, who Lawrence and DiCaprio have compared to climate activist Greta Thunberg in interviews, is a foul-mouthed and (understandably) emotional Ph.D. candidate at Michigan State University who is sick of the government’s inaction and all-around bullshit. The comparison to Thunberg is on point: While outside COP26, the international climate negotiations in Scotland this year, the impassioned 18-year-old Swedish activist famously chanted, “You can shove your climate crisis up your ass!”

Together, Mindy and Dibiasky work with NASA scientist Dr. Clayton “Teddy” Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan) to tell the world the truth about the comet—that it is coming and that, in six short months, it will kill all of humanity. A world which, to no avail, fails to respond appropriately to their message. The film mocks our society’s fixation on the seemingly irrelevant, superficial matters rather than the real issues at hand. DiCaprio confirmed that this was the message the creators wanted to portray following a screening of the film in New York City.

“It’s about holding a mirror on us,” he said. “What we’re distracted by, what we value, and ultimately—how we deal with bad news.”

When the two astronomers make an appearance on live daytime television to announce the world’s impending doom, the show sees few views, clicks, and overall engagement from the audience. Meanwhile, it sees a huge spike in engagement when pop star Riley Bina (Ariana Grande) joins the show to talk about her recent breakup with rapper DJ Chello (Kid Cudi).

The real-life irony is palpable. I found that all the top Google stories for Don’t Look Up were about what Lawrence wore to the movie’s premiere (see screenshot) instead of focusing on its central themes: the climate crisis and capitalism as the usher of our destruction. The film has other parallels to real-life too—from U.S. President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) having an uncomfortably inappropriate and nepotistic relationship with her Chief of Staff son Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill) to a tech billionaire’s mission to space.

Actor Mark Rylance plays Peter Isherwell, the third-richest man on Earth in the movie, who also happens to be the president’s main funder. His mission to send drones to extract a mineral worth trillions of dollars from the comet is reminiscent of a similar billionaire space race happening among Tesla creator Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Isherwell’s mission is heavily representative of prioritizing capitalist interests over human lives and of the dangers presented when the ultra-rich take charge of leading scientific innovation while ignoring actual scientists.

In the end, we’re shown who really holds the power when we allow greed, wealth, and capital to win.

In terms of the real world, we’re seeing a kindred response from society to the climate crisis. In the wake of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change publishing its latest report undoubtedly connecting “human activity” to rising temperatures and extreme weather events, world leaders have failed to respond adequately through climate legislation. COP26, where these so-called leaders convened to solve the climate crisis, resulted in very little beyond pledges that still keep us on track to hit at least 2.4 degrees Celsius of global warming above pre-industrial levels.

While the film, which features a majority-white cast, does a good job at communicating this sense of urgency, it ignores the many realities and nuances of climate change and how it will and is affecting us all differently. For one, the film only features one Black scientist—Dr. Oglethorpe—ignoring the varied expertise of scientists of color, especially from the Global South. Then, there’s the comet itself. A fiery hot rock demolishing Earth in a matter of minutes is an oversimplified allegory for climate change, which has been happening over decades. Climate change also disproportionately impacts low-income communities and communities of color whereas, with a comet, all of humanity is equally screwed (that is, except the rich).

Around the world, we all face various levels of the climate crisis. Placing the power of solving said crises in the hands of the rich and famous, most of whom have no idea what frontline communities are experiencing, will prove to be detrimental. In fact, the latest World Inequality Report has stated that the disparity of climate emissions between the rich and poor is just as large as the economic disparity, finding that the top 1% pollute, on average, over 16 times more carbon than the full population in a year. So, what sense does it make to trust those to solve a crisis they created in the first place? A crisis whose unwavering constant is making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Toward the end of the film, a political division breaks out. The scientific community and its supporters encourage the world to look up. That’s all it would take to see the comet barreling straight toward Earth. Meanwhile, President Orlean’s campaign retaliated with the slogan, “Don’t Look Up,” encouraging supporters to keep their heads down, nose to the grindstone, and remain ignorant to their impending doom.

The film is the perfect metaphor for the climate denial that feeds the climate crisis today. While some of us choose to look down and ignore the reality of our world’s ecological collapse, others can’t afford to. For them, the comet has already struck, so to speak.

Leaving us to question: Will you look up?

Don’t Look Up comes out in select theaters on Dec. 10, 2021, and on Netflix Dec. 24, 2021.

just watched it
they really didn't bother to pretend it's not a propaganda piece
the good guys are the underdog, Democrat-types scientists who simply believe logic and science, love their families even if they have a sexual mis-step here and there but it's ok because their spouse also cheated on them
the bad guys are the Trump-esque president figure (including a throwback to Trumps comment about his daughter) who doesnt care about impending doom and only takes it "seriously" to drown out the news of his harrasment history, and stupid MAGA rednecks who get played by evil billionaires who rejecet THE TRUTH to a point that they refuse to see it with their own eyes even tho it's there, and the right-wing biased media nad public who are brainwashed sheep who believe everything they are told
Also the bad, billioare caste who survive are all old White people, but they get a gruesome end as well

all in all it's the arcstory stolen form ealier movies that did it better and in a less preachy manner, like "Wag the dog"
That's too bad. I was kind of hopeful for it because the premise is actually pretty good. "What if humans were too fat with bread and circuses to care about or even notice a very obvious threat?"

The problem is, that's way too close to what the terrifying alt-right have been warning about for the past ten years, so naturally Hollywood had to put a pro-establishment spin on it. Satirizing a society that's in imminent danger but is too enslaved by vice to care is a right wing viewpoint unless specifically placed in the context of "republicans don't care about global warming" or "republicans don't care about covid".

Personally I'm just surprised they didn't go with the covid angle. Maybe this movie's been in the works since before 2020.

I've actually been expecting a zombie pandemic movie going for that angle at some point. The usual 'humans are stupid and evil' angle with those is the big pharmaceutical company enables or outright creates the outbreak for profit and/or overbearing tyrannical government takes draconian and ultimately counterproductive measures to cover it up or contain it but that hits too close to home for the kind of people that watch these movies and write these articles, so instead it'll be an Orange Man stand-in denying zombies exist until he gets bitten by one and turns and his supporters refusing to fight zombies and even allow themselves to be turned to own the libs.

Do..do people honestly sit down and like these without being told to?
I can't imagine anyone actually liking this unless they are already a very unhappy person and want to see something on the TV that reflects their unhappiness. The cast is good enough to get some laughs with the first act jokes, but the overall theme of the movie is that humanity is too stupid to survive because we won't listen when TV Scientist Man is yelling at us. The film undercuts its own theme repeatedly--the "bad guys" simply listen to a different Scientist Man who developed wonderfully advanced sci-fi technology and wanted to save the world--but it keeps grinding away, expecting us to take it seriously. The end of the world could have been very funny, but it's somber and ponderous. This is what you get for not listening to TV Scientist Man.

It just seems made by and for people who fantasize about death 24/7. That's extreme even for me.

Only they're entirely wrong on who would do what. Like, if aliens landed and wanted to enslave Earth Trump is the kind of guy who would go out fighting no holds barred, while Biden on the other hand would immediately bend down and start sucking alien dick.

2020 really showed us how cowardly our "leaders" truly are. A mob of college students with signs and laser pointers rolls into town and every governor, mayor, and police chief in the country instantly shits themselves and abandons their citizens to be ruined and murdered. They were so concerned with their own personal safety that they sat there on Twitter telling everyone to submit themselves to the mob while their cities were burning to the ground.

And then, once we thought they couldn't become more pathetic or self-centered, a bunch of unarmed boomers walked around in their palace for a couple hours and they responded by having a year long temper tantrum and insisting that having poor people in the same building as them was equivalent to a war that killed 3% of the country's population.

If any country wanted to take over, they could do so without firing a single shot. All they'd have to do is walk into DC and make a threatening gesture toward a politician and they'd be hand-delivered the deed to the country within 15 minutes.

A lot of their policy preferences depend on doomsday happening if they aren't enacted. Global warming is doomsday. COVID is doomsday. Nuclear arms were doomsday. Peak oil was doomsday. They reject the idea that these things are bad but survivable, or there are other smart people who can solve these problems without them.

I actually saw the movie... and I don't think this is article is getting it.

it's more that our society is fucking retarded and focuses on dumb shit.

Like the two scientist's who discovered the apocalyptic comet? They were rushed over to Washington DC and the white house to alert the president... and then were forced to wait for hours and hours as the president (Some blonde bitch) talks with her staff over one of her SC appointees being part of a controversy due to having been a male model in college, and then celebrating her birthday.

All the while the two doctors look up the news, and instead of, you know, the apocalyptic asteroid that will destroy the planet in six months, all the news is either about the aforementioned SC appointee, or some random celebrity break up.

Then the next day, when they finally get to meet the president, and lay out all the information, the dumb bitch and her chief of staff (jonah hill) say they should just "Wait and Assess."

I had other shit to do so I couldn't see anymore, But I found the entire fuck fest to be... disturbingly in tune with how the world is now adays.

Also.. the most amazing thing about the movie is a hard-core lefty along with all his lefty friends made a parody movie of what's going on with the goverments handling of covid and none of them nor the lefties who watch it will see or comment on that fact. They really are NPCs, it's sad.

I liked the movie, even though it was probably intended to be propaganda, I really think it is what you make it. Remember, the scientist guy is also a piece of shit (cheats on his wife.) The thing was written before covid, so it isn't about that.

Biden is literally a half-baked version of Wallace Breen and there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise. He would bow down to the Combine overlords while Trump grabs a crowbar.

Also I watched the movie a bit and the constant "THE WORLD IS ENDING FUCK YOU" bullshit annoyed the hell out of me. It seems like a propaganda piece intended for miserable liberals, disguised as a "comedy" movie.

Honestly if society is that fucking stupid and can't prioritize survival, especially over the sort of bullshit that we at the Farms laugh at daily, then they deserve to be wiped out by an asteroid. It reminds me of how most of the humans in Invader Zim are total idiots. Aside from the comedy aspect it's probably so that more viewer relateability and sympathy can go to Zim, who is an actual alien trying to dominate Earth.

After we get through all this bullshit one of the new cultural norms we establish should be that cowardice is dishonorable and open to ridicule. We don't have to go all samurai and kill ourselves upon defeat, defeat is fine as long as you fight or stand up well to your cause. But if you run or hide anytime you're met with adversity then you're gonna have a bad time.

Yeah, kinda surprised so many people are missing the point of the movie. It's not really about my political/science man is better than your political/science man or the fact that rich and powerful people ruin everything. The whole point of the movie is that humanity as a whole is so obsessed with stupid shit they don't really care when the end of the world is literally on their doorstep. The movie continually beats you over the head with this but based on people's reaction to the movie (even in this thread) I see that is apparently necessary.

Like you say, the news scene early in the movie cuts to the heart of it. These guys are going on tv to explain how the planet is completely doomed but their story isn't even considered the most important story on the program, it's saved for last and the hosts try change the subject by asking if aliens are real. Everyone is more interested in Ariana Grande breaking up with her boyfriend than the fact the earth is about to be destroyed.

The political and rich tech stuff is just an extension of that idea. The president is more concerned with the midterms and does not take the threat seriously until something bad happens in her political career and she needs a way to get positive attention. They form a plan and execute said plan and are like 10 minutes away from knocking the rock off course until the rich tech guy comes in and cancels it so they can go with his plan. The focus isn't really how he is ruining things as much as the fact that they keep making one stupid decision after another despite the fact everyone on the entire planet is going to die.

I mean for christ sake the movie ends with the rich people escaping the planet in cryostasis and 20k years later they land on a new planet and the first thing the president does is see an animal she thinks looks cute and she walks directly to it to try and pet it. It proceeds to eat her face and the final shot is more of the animals encircling the rest of the survivors. Really doesn't get more blatant than that.

"The rich will doom us all but not the good kind of rich who run NGOs and want to topple governments, erase borders, and delete white people. Those are the heroes."

Even as someone who agrees with the film's message, I didn't really like the movie...

BUT, I was fine with the ending, people literally dying of retardation. It wasn't out of place with the rest of the movie and if anything seems entirely plausible.
