Business The labor shortage is permanent, survey suggests

For months, employers have been telling stories of a labor shortage, as they struggle to hire and fill understaffed workplaces.

They may be singing this tune for a long time.

The right-leaning US Chamber of Commerce polled 529 Americans who became unemployed during the pandemic, and haven't returned to work as of early November. Of the respondents, more than half (53%) said they're just somewhat active, or not "very active at all," in their job search. A whopping 65% said that they don't expect to return before 2022, and a third don't expect to return before the April of 2022.

Finally, 8% of respondents said they "never plan to return to work." Goldman Sachs researchers previously estimated that 3.4 million people left the labor force. About 1.5 million were early retirees, and 1 million were on-time retirements. The number of self-employed workers has also ticked up amidst labor shortages.

All of this adds up to one thing: Workers may not be coming back anytime soon. They're demanding higher pay, more safety measures, and better benefits. In many cases, they decided after surviving a pandemic that life was too short to work in a job they don't like.

Now, the Chamber's survey suggests that labor shortages may be more permanent amidst a "Great Realization," as a good chunk of the usual labor force remains on the sidelines — perhaps for forever.

It'll 'remain tough' to get workers in 2022
A note from S&P global economists led by Beth Ann Bovinos said that it will "likely remain tough" to find workers in 2022, and those workers will cost businesses more. Right now, according to S&P, 45% of the people who left the labor force are prime-age workers — people ages 25-54 — and "their return is key to stabilizing the job market." That's 1.4 million workers, 68% of whom are women.

Labor constraints are driven by people who left the labor force, according to S&P, meaning people who aren't actively working or job searching. That means those aren't opting to stay unemployed and receive benefits.

And, while S&P estimates that 58% of the 3 million exits are temporary, it's still unclear when they will return. For those 1.4 million workers, it probably won't be until "pandemic-related issues are resolved." As Omicron, a new coronavirus variant, starts to make its way through the US, it seems likely that "pandemic-related issues" will stick around.

At the same time, employed workers have been increasingly acting with their feet. In September, 4.4 million workers quit their jobs, marking the sixth month of near-record quits. In other words, for half of 2021, workers quit like never before, and showed no signs of slowing.

Anecdotally, businesses have had success retaining and hiring workers by keeping wages and benefits high. Much of this has been attributed to workers yielding more leverage, although some economists have noted that wage gains are still a drop in the bucket, and may not stick around without structural changes like a minimum wage hike.

But as workers begin to reenvision work and what it means to them — and thousands take to the picket line to demand better conditions — labor leaders are hoping to take advantage of a pivotal moment to build worker power and collective action.

If the labor shortage is true, and supply and demand is true... ... ... I need a large fucking raise for continuing to keep this shit-heap of an economy going.

You are the only person that makes a job dead end. If you dont put forth additional effort, request more training and demonstrate initiative, then yeah your soul will be crushed. But you dont deserve to advance if you never worked to advance

Yep, absolutely right.

It certainly ain't the employers with their persistent, open, gleeful contempt for the very people making them their money. It sure as hell also ain't:

* No overtime opportunities
* CRAP healthcare with 5,000$ deductibles, 50$ copays, or NONE AT ALL
* No dental, vision, or EAP
* Constant micromanaging and abuse
* CRT baked into training
* Troon worship baked into training
* Faggot worship baked into training
* Anti white, anti Christian bigotry, racism, and abuse being fashionable
* Punch in one minute early? WRITE UP
* Stay 5 minutes late--after the boss fucking TOLD you to--WRITE UP

Newp... gotta be these LAZY, feckless, goldbrickin' leeches jus' not wanting to work.

They quit working because frankly it's soul crushing to work dead end jobs with no future prospects.
So don't do that, rëtard. Get a real job, like a real white person. If your job competes with welfare, you have failed as a human being.
I cannot imagine being "antsy" to go make money for someone else.
I pay for your tendies. How does it feel to be as productive as your average nigger?

I want to get work but all these places' demands are so bizarrely specific, like wtf man

It's because they don't want you.

They've probably already given the job to the department head's wife's sister who gave head to the plant manager last week, or a pajeet. That's a couple reasons why they demand 10 years experience in a field (or software) that's only existed for FOUR, with a minimum bachelor's degree.

Also: A lot of these jobs REQUIRE a degree, either AA, Bachelor, or post Baccalaureate, and STILL pay LESS than some fass fud.

But, no... people be lazy an' sheet. Every single one of them. Not ONE solitary honest hard worker in the US today. S'why they gotta import furrinhers because we are all. so. fucking. lazy. and. picky. Every. single. solitary. one. of. us.

Why now of all times to have specific requirements? I doubt this labour shortage even exists if that's the case, lol!

I wonder what the long term affect of a labour shortage would entail? Would it create mass poverty? A boom in job requirements be speaking Spanish/Chinese?
Should people living on the breadline or are homeless jump at the chance to finally earn some easy money?

Can't speak for who you quoted but when it comes to feeling antsy to get back to work its not to make them money or necessarily to make yourself the money. It's because you otherwise don't have anything to do
I have never understood this.

I've been working for many years now, but in my younger days I spent ten years fucking around in bands on the dole. I was never, ever bored. So many books to read. So many hobbies to take up. Shitposts to make. Computers to tinker with. Things to create, people to meet. Was not bored for a single second.

Eventually you get old enough so that "broke loser in a band" no longer gets you laid, so I had to suck it up and join the workforce. I would go back to not working in a fucking heartbeat. Was the best time of my life!

This worker demoralization is exactly what happened in the USSR when class mobility and personal freedoms were abolished, and that's why not working was a crime. There was no other motivation.

Work is so fucking bleak now. 9 to 5s are a mythical sort of job. Stores and restaurants stay open all the time. Actually getting days off on holidays is only for the privileged. What is the incentive to work?

In generations previous my current situation would have afforded me luxuries and leisure that are now unimaginable. Can't climb your way out of a broken system.

It's our responsibility to work as little as possible and enjoy every single moment on this gay earth to its absolute maximum. I bet you I'm not alone in saying I will never work harder than I absolutely have to ever again.

Hey, can any of you imagine actually doing a job you like?? I work somewhere I love, even though the pay is miserable. I've worked places I hated, places where I contributed absolutely nothing, but the pay was great. When you work a position you enjoy, you are understandably antsy to go back to work. Obviously if you just want to go back to work to fill time in your day, you're just a normie. But if you enjoy your work, you go in not to make money, but to have fun, achieve something, and - imagine this - socialise with people whose company you enjoy. But these jobs are becoming increasingly rare since the robot/pajeet takeover and shift into bullshit jobs (vague made up roles where people are hired to do meaningless tasks) especially in technology.

However, I also love being unemployed because I have fun. Some jobs I do also enable me to have fun because they are rewarding, allow me to contribute meaningfully, and the people are great. Conclusion is not to sell your soul for a couple extra grand a year, just do whatever you can that enables maximum fun. Be a hedonist (in the philosophical sense), all these unemployed people living off the dole are, why shouldn't you?

But you dont deserve to advance if you never worked to advance
I got a promotion and a pay raise thisd year by taking more naps and grinding bars in video games while on the clock. Office Space was a documentary and an instruction manual.

Just submit it anyways. Or lie/fudge the truth on the resume, or in the interview, or both. It's like dating, you just have to get over the apprehension and anxiety of "No" and any other sort of rejection and put yourself out there. You're going to get no's, but eventually, inevitably you will get to a "Yes." You should actually read all that decade-old Pick-Up Artist shit, but instead of applying it to women, apply it to the job search.

You sound like one of those whiny faggots from r/antiwork

LOL Nah.

You have to be the right skin color or right genitals to get promoted. It's never what you know.
Bullshit. It's neither. Anything is possible in business if you're charismatic enough. Promotion, pay raise, more sick days - all you've got to do is get inside their head and convince them it was their idea.
