Drunk or not, a person who decides to run over the participants of a specific event, does so because he hates them and because he had fantasized about doing so when sober.

We don't know exactly why he did it and apparently didn't make a statement, but it's pretty clear it was a targeted and hateful act.

He was either fleeing from the stabbing in his car with 2 others, got caught in the parade, had to continue along because he was boxed in and ran over people when he couldn't get past the marching band or he deliberately went joy riding with two other people in his car, saw the parade and hit the gas when he saw the band.
The only possible evidence of motive is black supremacist facebook posts but that could be circumstantial evidence. There's also video of him making his way down the street for multiple interesections weaving between the crowd and only hitting the band at the end. He still ran through the blockade onto Maple Avenue though. Guess we'll know more at the press conference soon.
