I disagree because the square pixels of the display are also artifact-producing. There is a reasonable argument to be made that displaying a blown-up video with bicubic interpolation is no more disingenuous than displaying a small image on a TV, and is certainly better than nearest-neighbor for real-life video content.

It depends what you mean by "better." Better usually means "looks nicer" but in this case it should mean "less likely to produce a misleading result."
