Yeah I don't want to derail and gunsperg this thread up too much but Matt Damon is wrong on a number of points.

.223 came from the parent cartridge of .222 which was invented over a decade before the .223 made it's introduction. Like all of these small high speed rounds their purpose was long range varmint shooting.

The .223 was developed from the .222 to answer a military contract at the end of the 1950s for a program that would eventually become the M16.

But close range and full auto uncontrollably were never considerations. They wanted a lighter and cheaper ammunition that could replicate the performance of the .308 @ 500 yards.

Full auto was never a consideration at the infantry level as the military doctrine of the day still valued marksmanship over volume of fire particularly in the US Marines. Remember this was before the dumpster fire of the Vietnam war.
