I'm no legal expert, so can somebody explain something to me.

Let's assume for a moment that Kyle is declared guilty. Let's also assume that by then, the Judge is 100% on his side and genuinely believes he's innocent. Could the Judge do anything to mitigate his sentence or set things up for a favorable appeal? I'm unclear what the authority of the two groups is and how they intersect.

The defense can file a motion for a directed verdict. If the judge decides no reasonable jury could convict given the non disputed facts Kyle will walk.
