Culture Gamers' Obsession with Guns is More Cringe Than Kanye

A couple of weeks ago a question started to nag at the inside of my squishy skull: why are gamers so obsessed with guns? The answer became quite obvious after only a little bit of thought. I mean, we all play games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, each of which contain real-world weaponry, and each of which require us to upgrade weapons and equip attachments. We develop an unusual fascination with weaponry through customization and competitive play. No matter the obviousness of this answer, though, one thing still continues to stand out. This obsession with real-world weaponry, whether a developer got a gun to be accurate, and whether an in-game gun has a real-world counterpart is... kind of creepy. It's also cringy as f**k.

Now, I'm not about to make the classic argument that video games cause real-world violence. That debate was debunked years ago. There are countless studies that prove otherwise, and the whole conversation is rather boring, so let's not even go there. Instead, my argument is simply an emotional one. Isn't it kind of weird to know a s**tload of stuff about devices that have one purpose, and one purpose only: killing.

Let's all be real: if we had done what we obsessively do in-game in the real world, we would be complete freaking psychopaths. There is no doubt about this. There's a reason why gun violence is such a hot-button topic, because it's horrific. Whilst games don't turn kids into killers, they do glorify violence, and make it – literally – into a game. It's kind of weird, but why do we like these kinds of games so much?

Why Do We Like Guns and Violent Video Games?

Humans enjoy violence, there's no denying that. We have been waging wars since we were apes. We love Tarantino movies, Fast & Furious, and Michael Bay movies. We focus on violent histories, rather than peaceful histories. Most "man" movies are all about violence and sex. The two seem to go weirdly hand-in hand: look no further than James Bond. It makes sense, then, that gamers like to play violent video games.

We also need to remember the medium that we are talking about: video games. They are games. They're not books, they're not songs, they're not pizzas, they're games. Games have mechanics, and something that humans love to do is practice their precision in the form of a game. That's why Billiards is so popular, that's why we like to play Football, that's why we like to throw Darts. It's a game, it's fun, and it practices an almost tribal desire within ourselves. The desire to be accurate, the desire to hit that tiger with the f**king spear that our Grandfather passed down to us through the generations. If we miss the Tiger, we die. Thus, we like to hit the Tiger, and more specifically, hit the Tiger somewhere that'll kill it straight away – precision.

So, now that I have explained why humans like violence, and why humans like the act of shooting a gun (both in-game and in real life), it's time for you to ask the question: so what the hell are you going on about, mate?

What the Hell are You Going on About, Mate?

I am going on about how freakin' weird it is whenever I hear about the specifics of an in-game gun. Seriously, these people who run around the Sub-Reddits, the Twitter feeds, the Discord Chats, and the Facebook Comment Sections of the world with an unbridled passion and specificity about guns astound me. These are inanimate metal objects have the sole purpose of killing things, and yet people are so obsessed that they feel the need to correct other people on the origins of a specific type of SMG... it's weird guys, it's truly weird. It's also cringy as f**k.

Cringer than Kanye, and he's the guy who wrote "Famous". Seriously.

So my message to gamers is simple:
it's not cool to know so much about guns that you can point at a weapon and tell me whether it's the 1947 edition or the 1948. It's just kind of lame, and kind of creepy. If you want games to be taken seriously, if you want to stop hearing those news-channel bells ring, if you want to stop hearing the predictable sound of some fifty-year-old nut job saying the words "Are violent video games poisoning our poor children?", then cut it out with this creepy s**t.

Funny since those same shooters are looking a little bit different these days.

Gun accuracy A-, Demographic accuracy Z+.
My Battlefield 1/WW1 history IS a but rusty, but the representation in Battlefield 1 is appropriate. Blacks and Arabs were involved in WW1.

Even so, is it that distracting?

Even the gun accuracy in BF1 was shit, it's all prototypes and other anachronistic shit. The original BF1942 was somewhat better but still had problems. The Forgotten Hope mod for BF1942 really dialed up the historical accuracy to 11.

Guns are cool and it's fun to shoot them.

Anyone who uses cringe unironically these days is either 12 years old or a game journo.

I've never seen a gun outside a video game and know nothing about them other than being able to seperate them into the five basic food groups: hand gun, rifle, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher. I still don't give a shit if enthusiasts want to talk about the specifics on their forums, how does that effect me?

Journalist class has lost all benefit of doubt or empathy except for free gas.
lol calm down, I have dealt with "military obsessing retards" before so that's probably why I have a different opinion about this article, but there's no reason to be so mad like this. If you're angry toward a journalist, then you aren't better than those who mad at lolcows.

The only thing I'd say is cringe is people's obsession with buying series that are taking two steps back and one step forward in shooters. Que CoD as of late.

I don't mind obsession with shooters I just don't like that people are giving money(and obsessed) to badly made ones based on loyalty to how the series used to be.

Fuck you, drongo. Where I live, it's practically sound to talk about guns as long as you're not thinking of going on rampages or using them on people. Maybe if you had a gun, you'd avoid having dingos eat your babies and you wouldn't have violent gangs rape your men and women.
Funny it's always the "you need a gun to feel like a man" types who are the most whiny, effeminate, soy swilling NPC sheeple on the face of God's green earth.

Even the gayest of gay drag queens probably thinks the author is a British cigarette.

I mentioned that point. WW1 didn't have many automatics that you'd expect from a FPS. However, the inaccuracies didn't distract or undermine the game as a whole.
I'd say they undermine WAY more than having Blacks in the Germany Army. You had about one submachine gun for every 100 bolt-action rifles in the army. Tanks were slow lumbering pieces of shit that never even fought each other and were basically just a giant shield to cross no-man's land. But by letting you play with any gun you want, Battlefield makes WW1 feel not even like WW2, but like some modern shooter, where "spray and pray" is a real thing.

Would it have been a better game without the fancy guns? Eh, maybe. I feel like there has to be a nice intermediate level between Battlefield - which actually has fun with tanks and horses and airplanes - and autism simulators like Verdun.

They are really annoying when it comes to modding scene, go post something that isn't "super realistic accurate immersion #128375" on STALKER/ARMA 3 modding section and see how people would react.

Imagine enjoying people getting their worldview shaped by newsources controlled by certain kinds of people who want society to be under their ideals.

We're all guilty of this, but I don't feel comfortable with the kind of world these assholes want. And it's more than just "eat bugs and live in cube unit sheeple" with me.

so Kanye had nothing to do with this argument, he's just some random celebrity the author has a hateboner for?
They wanted to drop Kanye into the article.

This article has a ton of buzzword/name dropping for no reason other than it might get picked up or someone might get angry or happy that something was mentioned it and link it somewhere.

Were this article food it would be the Styrofoam cup McDonald's coffee is melting through.

Guns are awesome and if you don't think they are you're lame.

It's a cultural thing. We shot the British and told them to go away while the Australians did fuck all until the King decided he didn't want to have to run their shit anymore.

I'm tired of articles by people who have never actually shot a gun or even literally lived through anything dangerous or violent lecturing us about violence in media.

There are a lot of assholes lately who are trying to weaponize the "cringe" label. They'll slap it on anything they don't like and hope it sticks. I imagine they are driven by a fear of social rejection and ridicule, and they hope others are as well.
